Walking helps to have good conversations

Walking offers many benefits and, above all, gives room for a good conversation with each other. I discovered these five advantages while walking in Corona Pandemic:

Communication and attention

I notice that when walking you pay more attention to each other and the environment. You are both in neutral territory in the open air, so you are more likely to speak out about your insights and appreciation for each other. Walking not only gets your body moving, but also your thoughts, which can lead to new insights.

Listening

Managers who listen with the intention of really understanding others are better informed about what is going on. To truly understand someone, you have to use your eyes, your heart, and your empathy. Because as a manager you are also detached from your work environment while walking, you are often better able to focus on this.

You don't always have to agree with your conversation partner, but you do have to be able to understand intellectually and emotionally. After all, being understood and being recognized are important human needs.

The right questions

An important tip is not to go into a conversation with a biased attitude. Instead, ask open-ended questions. Realize that we all look at the world through our own glasses. It's not about being right, dare to ask questions and stay true to yourself. Questions that work include:

  • What do you care about?
  • What gives you energy?
  • What are your bright spots this week?
  • How do you take care of yourself during this period?

Open conversations

Naming a problem is often quite exciting. In the setting where you are sitting together at a table or desk, this can literally be a barrier to being open. Because you walk next to each other during a walk and don't have to look at each other all the time, you relax more.

You can find the right words faster by moving. And if something needs to be talked out, the tension you build up in your body can be better dissipated. Outside there is literally and figuratively more air and space.

Performance

It is well known by now that walking is good for us. Nevertheless, employers are sometimes afraid of loss of productivity when walking during working hours. To them I would like to say: walking actually makes you perform better! By exercising in the open air, your body produces substances that make you feel good and the stress hormone decreases.

Happy employees who enjoy going to work and perform well make all the difference. That is why it is important that employees remain employable, now and in the future. Walking is therefore a real win-win situation for your employees and your organization.

Finally, do you notice that your employee has a request for help? Then dare to ask what he or she needs in terms of support. Make agreements with each other and keep a finger on the pulse. And make a walking appointment!
